Huffington Post: Karl Rove Created Rick Perry — Now Can He Stop Him?

-by Howard Fineman

August 25, 2011- WASHINGTON — Karl Rove won't say it aloud, but he is afraid of Rick Perry: afraid that the smack-talking Texas governor will wreck the GOP's chances of winning the White House and the Senate in 2012.

The Perry-Rove story is shaping up as the ultimate tale of dangerously unintended consequences, with Rove in the role of Dr. Frankenstein and Perry as his living, rampaging political creation.

Insiders know that Rove helped launch Perry's career by advising Perry's successful run for agriculture commissioner in 1990.

But the larger, deeper point is that Rove designed and built the Texas Republican machine that has now allowed Perry to go national — even after Rove and company tried (and failed) to stop him by running Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) against him for re-election.

Huffington Post: Karl Rove Warns GOP Presidential Candidates Against Moving Too Far To The Right (VIDEO)

-by Paige Lavender

August 15, 2011- Karl Rove is urging Republican candidates to consider the notion of electability while campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination ahead of 2012.

The former Senior Adviser and Deputy Chief of Staff to former President George W. Bush discussed the issue during an appearance on Fox News on Monday. GOP 2012 relays what Rove had to say on the network:

"You don't want these candidates moving so Right in the Republican primary that it becomes impossible for them to win the general election, because it will become a self-defeating message in the primary.
People want to win. They don't want somebody who goes so far to the extremes of either party that they lack a chance to carry a victory off in November."

NBC News: DNC ad seizes on Romney’s ‘corporations are people’ line

-By NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro

AMES, IA — Could Mitt Romney's "people are corporations, too" line dog the former Massachusetts governor the same way that Barack Obama's "bitter"/"cling to guns or religion" remarks did during the '08 campaign?

The Democratic National Committee hopes so. It's up with a TV advertisement seizing on Romney's remarks, which he delivered on Thursday at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. The ad — which willl air on broadcast and cable channels in Des Moines — concludes: "Mitt Romney. Putting People Corporations First."

Ultimately, Obama's "bitter" remarks didn't hurt him in '08. Then again, they weren't captured by camera; Obama delivered them at a closed-press fundraiser.

Politico: If Rick Perry gets in, will Karl Rove be out?

-By Kenneth P. Vogel

August 5, 2011- If Texas Gov. Rick Perry ultimately decides to run for president, it would shake up the Republican race, directly threatening Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty and the other candidates vying to be the leading alternative to front-runner Mitt Romney.

But it could also make things tricky for another powerful Texan — Karl Rove.

Rove, who served as George W. Bush’s political strategist in Texas on his way to becoming the GOP’s best known political operative, had a falling out with Perry and his staff when Bush was governor in the 1990s that has become the stuff of Lone Star lore.

NBC News: Firm gives $1 million to pro-Romney group, then dissolves

Records offer no clues who was behind mystery company that donated to 'super PAC'

-By Michael Isikoff

August 4, 2011- A mystery company that pumped $1 million into a political committee backing Mitt Romney has been dissolved just months after it was formed, leaving few clues as to who was behind one of the biggest contributions yet of the 2012 presidential campaign.

The existence of the million-dollar donation — as gleaned from campaign and corporate records obtained by NBC News — provides a vivid example of how secret campaign cash is being funneled in ever more circuitous ways into the political system.

The company, W Spann LLC, was formed in March by a Boston lawyer who specializes in estate tax planning for “high net worth individuals,” according to corporate records and the lawyer’s bio on her firm’s website.

The corporate records provide no information about the owner of the firm, its address or its type of business.

Huffington Post: Priorities USA Raises $5 Million To Counter Attack Ads From Karl Rove-Backed Crossroads GPS

-By Jack Gillum

July 31, 2011- WASHINGTON — An outside group founded this spring by two former Obama White House advisers has raked in millions in donations since April, relying in part on top-flight fundraisers and labor unions to counter GOP-leaning ads this summer critical of the president and congressional Democrats.

Priorities USA Action, an independent group founded by former Obama aides Bill Burton and Sean Sweeney, said Sunday its donations included $2 million from film producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, as well as $500,000 each from Newsweb founder Fred Eychaner and the Service Employees International Union.

Priorities USA Action and sister Priorities USA have raised more than $5 million since this spring, Burton said Sunday. Those amounts paled in comparison to the $86 million raked in by the Democratic National Committee from April through June, as top donors focused on President Barack Obama's first fundraising quarter.
